About Tywyn's Tides

Tywyn sits on the eastern shore of Cardigan Bay, where the tidal range is among the largest in Wales — typically 3 to 5 metres between high and low water during spring tides. This dramatic difference transforms the beach throughout the day, revealing vast stretches of sand at low tide and creating energetic surf conditions as the tide comes in.

Tides in Cardigan Bay follow a semi-diurnal pattern — two high tides and two low tides roughly every 24 hours, with each cycle shifting forward by around 50 minutes per day. The highest tides (spring tides) occur around the full and new moon; the lowest tidal range (neap tides) falls around the quarter moons.

Tide predictions shown here are sourced from the UK Hydrographic Office EasyTide service for Aberdyfi station (0486), approximately 5 miles south of Tywyn. Times and heights are closely representative of conditions on Tywyn beach itself.

Tide Tips for Visitors

Best for Swimming
The two hours either side of high tide give the safest, deepest water for swimming. Avoid the ebb tide when currents are strongest.
Best for Dolphin Spotting
Bottlenose dolphins follow fish shoals into the shallows around high tide. Check our dolphin spotting guide for more tips.
Best for Rock Pooling
Low tide exposes the rock formations at the southern end of the beach — ideal for children exploring pools and marine life.
Best for Beach Walks
At low tide the beach stretches for miles in both directions. A walk north towards Aberdyfi is most rewarding 2–3 hours after high tide.
Spring vs Neap Tides
Spring tides (around full and new moon) create the largest tidal range and the most dramatic beach conditions. Neap tides are calmer with less variation.
Safety on the Beach
Be aware of the incoming tide if walking far from the promenade — the tide can come in quickly around the southern headland. Always check times before a long walk.
