The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway has been carrying visitors to the top of Constitution Hill since 1896, and at 237 metres is the longest electric funicular railway in Britain. Originally powered by a clever water-balance system, it was converted to electric operation in 1921 and still runs at a gentle four miles an hour, giving plenty of time to take in the views — on a clear day you can see 26 Welsh mountain peaks alongside the sweep of Cardigan Bay. At the summit there's a giant camera obscura, a café, and level, wheelchair-accessible footpaths, plus a games room and crazy golf for younger visitors. Open all year, with trains running every few minutes and no need to book ahead — just turn up at the northern end of Aberystwyth promenade.
