Aberdovey holds a genuinely remarkable place in outdoor education history — it's where Outward Bound began, founded in 1941 by Kurt Hahn and Lawrence Holt to build resilience and confidence in young sailors during the Second World War, and it remains the organisation's spiritual home worldwide. Set on the edge of Eryri National Park overlooking the Dyfi estuary, the centre still runs courses combining mountain, sea and forest — think expeditions on Cadair Idris, the iconic jetty jump from the wharf, rock climbing on quiet sea cliffs and nights in forest cabins. Courses are aimed at schools, groups and young people rather than casual drop-in visitors, but the centre and its wharf are a lovely part of Aberdovey's story and streetscape, worth knowing about even if you're not there to take part.
