The Talyllyn Railway is the world's first preserved railway, opened in 1865 to carry slate from Bryn Eglwys quarry. Today steam locomotives haul passengers on a 7¼ mile journey through the beautiful Fathew Valley to Nant Gwernol. The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum at Tywyn Wharf is also well worth visiting.
