Lagoon & Nature Reserve

25 min walk from your cottage

Broad Water — Aber Dysynni in Welsh — is a saltwater lagoon a short walk north of Tywyn, formed when the old shipbuilding estuary of the River Dysynni gradually silted up in the 19th century. What's left is a genuinely tranquil spot, protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its wetland birdlife: expect to see reed warblers, oystercatchers, curlews and ringed plovers, with rarer visitors like bittern, water rail and even white-tailed eagle recorded here. It's also popular for canoeing and fishing, with views across to Craig yr Aderyn (Bird Rock) and Cadair Idris beyond. A quiet minor road runs north from Tywyn, roughly parallel to the railway, with informal roadside parking after around two miles — do check the tide before parking on the grassed area, as it can flood. A lovely, little-known extension to a walk along the beach or the Wales Coast Path.
