The Lloyd George Museum tells the life story of David Lloyd George, Britain's only Welsh-speaking Prime Minister, in his home village of Llanystumdwy on the Llŷn Peninsula. Recently given a £280,000 refurbishment with new interactive displays, the museum traces his journey from a modest upbringing — raised by his shoemaker uncle at neighbouring Highgate Cottage — to the highest office in the land, steering Britain through the First World War, laying foundations for the welfare state, and helping shape the Treaty of Versailles. His riverside grave nearby was designed by his friend Clough Williams-Ellis of Portmeirion fame. Highgate itself, his boyhood cottage next door, is closed for conservation work and due to reopen in spring 2027. Allow about an hour for the museum and the short film on his life. Open through the summer months and by appointment otherwise — a genuinely fascinating stop for anyone interested in British political history.
