Coed y Brenin Forest Park, just off the A470 near Dolgellau, was Britain's first purpose-built mountain biking centre and remains one of the sport's top UK destinations. Trails radiate out from the old visitor centre car park, ranging from easy family-friendly routes to genuinely technical black-graded singletrack, with views across to Cadair Idris and the Rhinogydd mountains along the way. There's also a dedicated skills area for developing technique, and Beics Brenin bike shop on site for hire and repairs. Beyond biking, it's a genuinely lovely spot for walkers too — waymarked trails wind through ancient woodland and along the rushing Afon Eden and Afon Gain, passing old ironworking sites and waterfalls, with routes to suit everything from a gentle family stroll to a proper hillside climb. Please note the visitor centre building and café closed in March 2025, though the bike shop, trails, car parks and outdoor toilets remain open and well maintained year-round — worth bringing your own food and drink. Charges apply for parking (roughly £3–£6 depending on length of stay). Around 40 minutes' drive north of Tywyn via the A487 and A470.
