Designed and built by architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975, Portmeirion is a unique village of colourful Italianate buildings set on a wooded peninsula overlooking the Dwyryd estuary. Famous as the filming location for cult TV series The Prisoner, it draws visitors from around the world. The grounds include subtropical gardens, woodland walks and a stunning private beach. The village has cafés, restaurants, shops and a hotel — a full day out worth the 40-mile drive north from Tywyn.
