Craig yr Aderyn — Bird Rock — rises sharply from the Dysynni Valley near Castell y Bere, a striking landmark that was once a coastal cliff before the valley silted up over the centuries. It's genuinely unique: the only regular inland breeding colony of cormorants in Wales nests on its crags, alongside rare red-billed choughs, and the whole hill is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Protection Area. It's also the site of a two-phase Iron Age hillfort, with the remains of stone ramparts still visible near the summit. The walk up is short but proper — around a mile round trip, 25 to 35 minutes each way, with a bit of a scramble near the top — and the reward is one of the best views in the valley, taking in Castell y Bere, the Dysynni below, and Cadair Idris beyond. Parking is at a small lay-by on the road towards Llanfihangel-y-Pennant. It pairs naturally with a visit to Castell y Bere, just a short drive further up the same valley.
