Nant Gwernol Forest Walks

Forest Walk & Waterfalls

20 min drive from your cottage

Nant Gwernol station is the eastern end of the line for the Talyllyn Railway, and from here a network of waymarked trails leads through Coed Nant Gwernol, a beautiful woodland gorge with a tumbling river and waterfalls. Three routes are on offer: the Stations Link (about a mile, connecting Nant Gwernol and Abergynolwyn stations, with views of the old Alltwyllt incline), the Cascade Trail (a mile, following the river closely before descending past the historic incline), and the longer Quarryman's Trail (four miles, climbing up to the ruined workings of Bryn-Eglwys Slate Quarry, part of the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales World Heritage Site, with an audio trail telling the quarrymen's story). You can reach it by taking the steam train right to the end of the line, or park in Abergynolwyn village and walk up — there's no parking at Nant Gwernol station itself. A genuinely lovely, unhurried way to extend a day on the railway.
