Tywyn Beach stretches for around five miles along Cardigan Bay, with wide firm sand backed by dunes at the southern end and sweeping views towards Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Cambrian Mountains. Bathing water here is tested annually by Natural Resources Wales and has held a strong classification in recent years, though ratings are reassessed each season so it can vary year to year. The west-facing aspect with very few rocks makes it a genuinely good surf beach — conditions are typically best either side of high tide, with the stretch south of the Victorian Slipway towards Aberdyfi popular with beginners. There's no lifeguard service, so take care when swimming and check conditions before going in. Dogs are welcome year-round on the beach either side of the main promenade section; a well-signed stretch directly in front of the promenade has seasonal restrictions from 1 April to 30 September. The promenade itself has a paddling pool, playground, public toilets, ice cream shops and plenty of free and pay-and-display parking. Keep an eye on the water — Cardigan Bay is home to one of Europe's largest resident populations of bottlenose dolphins, along with harbour porpoises, and both are regularly spotted from the shore. The Wales Coast Path runs directly along the beach, making it an easy starting point for longer coastal walks in either direction.
